AI Citations Are the New Backlinks
In traditional SEO, backlinks signal authority. In LLM SEO, citations signal authority. When Perplexity cites your website as a source, or ChatGPT references your data, that is the new gold standard.
What Gets Cited vs. What Gets Ignored
| Content Type | Citation Rate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Original data/research | High | AI needs unique sources |
| Comprehensive guides | High | AI prefers depth over breadth |
| FAQ pages with schema | Medium-High | Direct Q&A format matches queries |
| Listicles | Medium | Easy to extract and reference |
| Generic blog posts | Low | Nothing unique to cite |
| Thin content (<300 words) | Very Low | Not enough substance |
The Citation Formula
- Publish original data. Survey results, case studies, proprietary metrics - anything AI cannot find elsewhere.
- Use structured markup. FAQ schema, HowTo schema, data tables. AI parses structure faster than prose.
- Update regularly. AI models prioritize recent sources. A 2024 guide ranks below a 2026 guide.
- Be specific. "Save 12 hours per week" beats "save time." Numbers get cited. Vague claims get ignored.
